What is a Dry Eye Syndrome?

Dry eye syndrome is a condition that develops when your eyes do not produce and maintain enough tears to keep the eye’s surface lubricated. The symptoms vary from person to person. Often time’s patients are completely asymptomatic and have no idea that dryness is an issue until the optometrist brings it to their attention. The effects can range from minor dryness and discomfort to pain, blurred vision and frequent infections. Once treatment is initiated by one of our eye doctors, patients start to realize the difference in their eyes and notice that what they thought was normal actually wasn’t so.

Symptoms of dry eye syndrome can vary depending on the severity of the condition but can include:

  • Itching
  • Burning
  • Tearing
  • Redness
  • Irritation
  • Stinging
  • Blurry vision
  • Pain
  • Foreign Body Sensation

When it comes to treating dry eyes, each individual’s needs are unique. Treatment is initiated with the least invasive yet effective method. With careful follow up and monitoring, it is determined if other therapies need to be added. Treatment may consist of one or more of the following:

  • Dietary Supplements
  • Humidifier
  • Prescription Eye Drops or Ointments
  • Warm Eyelid Compresses
  • Eyelid Scrubs
  • Punctal Plugs
  • Surgical Punctal Occlusion
  • Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
  • Lipi Flow
  • Radio Frequency
